When the University of Miami opened to students in 1926 there was a Conservatory of Music under the leadership of Bertha Foster and a Bachelor of Music degree in Public School Music. These Our History web pages chronicle the contributions of tenured faculty (21), instructors (7), and visiting faculty (4). Information has come from primary sources: University Bulletins, Fact Books, and Commencement programs, Ibis yearbooks, Veritas faculty newsletters, Tempo student newsletters, Miami Hurricane newspapers, School of Music Score magazines, dissertations and theses, archived School of Music materials (administrative records, programs, pamphlets), the Miami Herald, and the Music Educators Journal.
The principal investigators for this project were Don D. Coffman and Lívia de Moraes. We thank the University of Miami Special Collections Digital Archives for permission to display images.
